Boardwalk Replacement

Millbrook Marsh Boardwalk December 2023
The Boardwalk

In November of 2023, the Millbrook Marsh Advisory Committee and the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority met for a Readiness Exercise to discuss kicking off a Capital Campaign for the replacement of the Boardwalk. Following this meeting, it was realized that staff are not ready for such a large campaign to replace the entire system. Shortly therafter, the Phase II Feasibility Study Report was finalized. This document provides recommendations on the methods and options for replacement, one of which is phasing. It was identified that the existing boardwalk structure has shifted throughout its life and that repairs are no longer feasible, as the system lacks foundational stability. The deck and structural components are nearing the end of their useful life. In the meantime, CRPR hired a Parks Specialist in the spring to monitor conditions and oversee maintenance requirements for the Boardwalk and new facilities. Two main sections of the Boardwalk remain closed at this time, with posted signs/barricades to prevent access.

A Joint Work Session will be scheduled next with the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority and the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center Advisory Committee to discuss the scope of the project more closely. This meeting will be facilitated by staff and will solicit feedback on accessibility improvements, key areas that hold the most educational value for the public and program participants, and the protection of natural resources beneath and surrounding the Boardwalk. Additional information on public meetings can be found here
