Centre Region Parks & Recreation, in cooperation with Central PA Convention & Visitors Bureau and Penn State University, prepared and submitted an application packet and a Centre Region sports videotape in April. The nationwide competition was sponsored as part of the 50th anniversary of Sports Illustrated, in cooperation with the National Recreation & Park Assn., to select and recognize one "Sportstown" community in each state.

The award was officially presented during Penn State Football halftime ceremonies at Beaver Stadium on 30 Aug 03 (photo above). The photo images were provided by The Sports Section, Inc. of Huntingdon, PA.
