The CRPR Active Walkers
This program was implemented by the Centre Region Senior Center as a pilot project in 2010 offered in cooperation with AARP and the National Recreation & Park Assn.
During the winter, join us for indoor walking at the senior center.
For the balance of the year, get to know the local parks and pleasant neighborhoods in and around the State College area. Each walk starts at 10 AM and last for 60-90 minutes, depending on the site. Details will be provided upon registration. Open to adults of all ages!
The Active Walkers program is FREE and began in April 2010. To register or obtain more information, please call the Senior Center at (814) 231-3076. |

No registration is necessary except for the initial meeting to complete the Release Form and, if needed, to pick up a (free) pedometer at the Senior Center. All walks are free. No age restrictions. No pets, please. In case of inclement weather, the scheduled walk for that week will be cancelled. The program will resume the next week as listed. Questions regarding CRPR Active Walkers or the Centre Region Senior Center activities may be directed to Virginia or Carol at 814-231-3076.
WINTER 2012 WALKING PROGRAM
Don’t let the snow and ice slow you down. Come into the Senior Center and walk the indoor perimeter (distance = 1/4 mile). It is flat, dry, warm and fun with friends! Stay a little longer and have a healthy lunch after your exercise. Step counters available.

The Benefits
of Walking
by Lenny Bernstein for the Washington Post, 1 Apr 2010
(Link to full article)
“You learned when you were barely a year old, so chances are you're pretty good at it by now. Put in 30 minutes
a day and your body will thank you; 60 minutes and your doctor will gush.
Yes, I'm talking about walking, still one of the easiest, most accessible and least expensive forms of exercise in
a world of Aqua Zumba, Kangaroo jumps and aerial fitness classes. Most people can do it. If you're physically
able, all you need are a good pair of shoes and a safe place to go.
The benefits are enormous. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physical activity -
which, for adults, includes 150 minutes weekly of brisk walking - reduces the risk of dying from coronary heart
disease and of developing colon cancer and diabetes. It helps control weight, develop muscle and reduce body
fat.
Walking and other forms of exercise can help reduce blood pressure and maintain healthy bones, muscles and
joints. It also can have psychological benefits by curbing anxiety and depression symptoms, improving mood
and fostering a sense of well-being. So why aren’t you out there walking?”
