2008 Garden Plot Information

CRPR oversees the operation of the community garden plots that were established in 2005 at Tudek Park as a result of the efforts of Mr. Joe Banks, the Tom Tudek Memorial Trust and Ferguson Township.

The garden plots officially opened for 2008 on Sat. 12 Apr 08. All plots have been marked and numbered and the water spigot is now active (for gardener use with buckets ONLY; hoses are strictly prohibited). The 2008 gardening season will officially end on 30 Nov 08. All gardeners are asked to clear their plots and ensure their plots were ready for winter. Please note that permit holders are not permitted to sublet or transfer their plot to new gardener.

NOTE: In order to control costs, delivered garden mulch is very limited.  As a result, individual gardeners are responsible for furnishing their own mulch for their own plot. Please do not use the hay or straw that is near the barn, since this is owned by the house tenant for the horses there.

For 2008, the CRPR Board previously established the following plot rates (for 102 total plots):
• 42 single-plots (300 sq. ft.) @ $20 rent / year
• 60 double-plots (600 sq. ft.) @ $30 rent / year
PLUS a Security Deposit equal to the annual rent amount (for each plot rented).

With proper maintenance and plot clean-up, the 2008 Security Deposit will be available after 30 Nov 08 for (1) full refund or (2) credit towards 2009 garden plot fees. The Security Deposit will be forfeited in full (without refund or credit) if the plot is not maintained and cleaned up as specified in the Garden Plot Agreement. The applicant agrees to abide by all of the regulations as noted on the Garden Plot Agreement and understands that the seasonal plot permit may be terminated at any time for violation of that Agreement.

On 25 Jan 08, 2008 Plot Application Forms were emailed to eligible 2007 gardeners. The forms were postal mailed only to those gardeners w/o email addresses. Starting on Monday 25 Feb 08, any remaining (unpaid) plots were made available to those on the waitlist.

Subject: Tudek Gardens End-of-Season Clean-up

Dear Gardeners,
Now that we have had our first frost of Fall, we need to begin focusing on preparing the gardens for winter. Please review the attached file to ensure your plot is properly prepared for winter. The following is a list of things that can be started now:
PATHS: As always, these need to be weeded and a fresh layer of wood chips should be put down. If the path has been washed out by the rain this year, please be sure this gets done. Plots that have a path that borders the fence need to remove any weeds or plants growing along the fence. If the paths are not properly maintained at the end of the season, CRPR may use an herbicide to kill the weeds in the path next spring. (This would not be done in the organic section)

PLOTS: Plants that are no longer growing should be removed from the plot and either composted, or placed in the approprate refuse bin outside of the gate. Please be sure to remove all sunflower plants from your plot if you have any. These tend to spread easily and attract a large number of small animals.

REFUSE BINS: Please DO NOT place any trash in the bins with the rocks or plant material. The plant material is taken to compost and any trash must be removed by hand. Keep the cost of the gardens low and take your trash home with you. This includes wire mesh, plastic, and wood stakes.

WOOD STAKES: Wood stakes should be removed (except for plot boundary stakes) and placed behind the tool shed. If you have a trellis system in your plot, please remove it completely once the plant on it is no longer producing.

It is important to leave the gardens clean and in good condition over the winter. Any gardeners who do not leave their plots and paths in good condition may not be invited back in 2009 and run the risk of forfeiting the security deposit.   Thank you.

Thank you for being a part of the Tudek Park Community Gardens in 2008! We would like to pass on the following information as we near the end of this growing season:

1. All plant material, except currently-growing crops, must be removed by November 14, 2008. You maycontinue to grow crops such as lettuce, perennials or ground covers. Depending on the winter weather, all gardening will end on December 1, 2008. Please place all plant material in Refuse Bin #3 located outside of the garden.

2. All plots, to include the border and path, must be weeded and left weed free. If not previously done inAugust or September, a fresh layer of wood chips should be added to the paths/borders around each plot after weeding. Please place all plant material in Refuse Bin #3 located outside of the garden.

3. Any material that is not biodegradable must be removed from the site by each gardener. This includesground covers (i.e. plastic), mulch, and other structures such as wire fencing or wooden enclosures.Materials that are being used to manage currently growing crops may be left in the plot untilDecember 1, 2008. Active compost bins may be left in the garden plots and must have the lidssecured for the winter. Empty compost bins must be removed from the plot over the winter months.

4. Please remove all stakes, except plot boundary stakes, from your plot. Please bundle them with the twineprovided by CRPR (located in the tool shed) and place the bundle behind the tool shed.

5. All plots will be evaluated by CRPR staff shortly after December 1, 2008. They will be checking:
• the condition of the plot to ensure that all non-growing plant material has been removed,
• that both the plot and path are free from weeds, and
• that all non-biodegradable material has been removed.

Gardener’s that have not cleaned their plot and path by November 30, 2008 or appear to have abandoned the plot may not be invited back in 2009 and will forfeit the security deposit. There is currently a waiting list of people interested in renting the plots for next year. To ensure an invitation to rent a plot next growing season and having the security deposit returned, please see that you take care of listed end-of-season tasks!

CRPR cannot ensure the security of personal items left at the gardens. Please remove any personal effects you have at the garden. If you have a question concerning the guidelines listed above, please contact the Centre Region Parks and Recreation office at (814) 231-3071 or by emailing Jennifer Stout at CRPR.
