New Trail Signs Installed At Thompson Woods Preserve & Walnut Springs Park

The staff of Centre Region Parks and Recreation have installed new directional and regulation signs at Thompson Woods Preserve and Walnut Springs Park in State College Borough and College Township. The park trails are now signed either for pedestrians only or for bicycles and pedestrians.

These parks were set aside as passive areas in order to assure their preservation. While all trails remain open to pedestrians, the Walnut Springs and Thompson Woods Management Plans each specify the trails where bicycling is prohibited. Many of the trails in those parks are narrow, curvy and have steep slopes that could create safety issues if used by both pedestrians and bicyclists. In addition, bicycle usage of the sloped, wood-chipped trails can cause the trials to wear and erode more quickly.

In Walnut Springs Park, bicycles are permitted only on the crushed-stone trail. In Thompson Woods Preserve, bicycles are only permitted on the (former township roadway) trail from the parking area to the area behind the former Clark Motors / YBC buildings. All other trails in those parks are now signed for pedestrians only.

A special brochure with a trail map of Thompson Woods Preserve is available HERE in PDF format. For more info, contact Greg Roth, Parks Supervisor groth@crcog.net (814) 234-1657

CRPR Recreation Scholarships for Youth

Centre Region Parks & Recreation provides a Youth Recreation Scholarship program for participants who are unable to pay recreation program fees. The funds for these scholarships are provided thanks to designated donations to Centre Region Gifts-For-Parks and by municipal assistance. The agency welcomes all Centre Region youth to participate in CRPR programs, leagues, and activities, and CRPR may be able to provide reduced fees to those who qualify. Parents should complete an application at least 14 days prior to the start of the program; however, scholarship fund availability and program registrations cannot be guaranteed. Upon review by the Director, qualified participants may receive assistance with program fees. All requests will remain confidential. Application forms are available through the CRPR office or may be accessed via this website.
