Highlights of Centre Region Parks & Recreation
- the
agency maintained 34 park areas totaling 452 acres on behalf
of 5 municipalities. In the past 10 years, municipal park acreage
has increased from 272 to 453 acres.
- over
700 programs and events were offered during 2001. As a result,
the agency conducted 40,538 customer transactions (including
program or league registrations & sign-ups, pavilion reservations,
etc.). Many more residents simply visited and enjoyed the facilities
at the municipal parks. A total of 814 reservation permits
were issued for the 14 picnic pavilions during 2001.
- the
PA. Recreation and Park Society presented two awards to the
agency in March:
• the “Agency
Publication & Promotion Award” for the seasonal CRPR
Leisure Guides.
• the “Excellence
in Programming Award” for the CRPR Remembrance Tree Program.
This program started in 1994 and continues to be very popular:
in 2000, 31 trees were planted and in 2001, 30 trees were planted.
Since the program began, a total of 159 trees have been planted
in municipal parks using donations.
- the
Centre County Historical Society presented (on Dec. 7) the “Award
for Excellence in Historic Preservation” for the adaptive
use of the barn at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.
- Millbrook
Marsh Nature Center hosted 3,290 program visits during 2001,
a 15% increase over 2000.
- the
Centre Region Senior Center hosted 21,572 program visits (a
new record) during 2001 and served 3,870 noon-time meals.
- an
agreement for Centre Regional Recreation Authority to renovate,
operate, and maintain 5 school district ballfields at 3 elementary
schools was negotiated. Formal approvals should be completed
during March.
