PROGRAMS FOR SCOUTING
at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center

Millbrook Marsh Nature Center has group programs designed especially for scout groups (in addition to our regular group programs!) Participants will complete activities and explorations that meet all or some of the requirements for a badge or try-it, while exploring Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with a naturalist. Leaders can schedule a program just for your troop or gather several troops together. The Program Fee is $5.00 per participant, paid in advance; this fee may be increased depending on the cost of the Scout badges/pins.

GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Juniors: Wildlife Badge (offered only through October)
Come to Millbrook Marsh Nature Center and learn about the wildlife that lives all around us while earning your Wildlife badge. Begin by learning about the different wildlife groups that live at the marsh and observe animals in their natural habitat. Learn what to look for while identifying plants and animals and practice your sketching skills. Identify various plants and animals, including poisonous ones to avoid and be aware of. You will have completed all the requirements for this badge by the end of the program.

Juniors: Earth Connections Badge (offered only through October)
Earn your Earth Connections badge by spending some time at Millbrook Marsh! Take a close look at a smaller area in the marsh and study it with a naturalist. Learn about ecological succession and determine what the marsh could look like in the future. Identify different plants, especially trees, and take a look at the inside of a tree. Play some games to learn about ecosystems while spending time with your friends. All requirements of the Earth Connections Badge will be completed by the end of the program.

Brownies: Outdoor Fun Try-It (offered only through October)
Complete the requirements for your Outdoor Fun Try-It while enjoying a day at Millbrook Marsh. Learn how to make trail signs and set up a trail for others to follow. Take a walk through the marsh while going on an Ecology hunt, looking for different kinds of plants and animals around you, while also looking for things that feel, smell, and sound in various ways. Take some rubbings of different objects in nature to remember your day. All requirements of the Outdoor Fun Try-it will be completed by the end of the program.

Brownies: Water Everywhere Try-It  (offered only through October)
Spend some time in Millbrook Marsh and learn about the water that is all around this area. Discover that water really is everywhere and test the cleanliness of different streams and puddles around Millbrook Marsh. Build a Water Snooper and then search through the stream and see what animals you can find in the water. Learn about the differences between salt and fresh water. You will have completed the Water Everywhere Try-It by the end of the day.

Brownies: Eco-Explorer Try-it (offered only through October)
Come and explore the Ecology of Millbrook Marsh Nature Center! Explore nature with a simple scavenger hunt and learn about different habitats within the marsh. We’ll work together to design a habitat model and learn about food chains within the ecosystem. All requirements of the Eco-Explorer try-it will be completed by the end of the program.

CUB & BOY SCOUT PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Scout Skill Workshops at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center

For the month of November, Millbrook Marsh Nature Center has a qualified facilitator to offer these Skill Workshops for Scout Troops (see below). Schedule for an evening to replace your weekly troop meeting or plan for a weekend. Two workshops can be scheduled together on a weekend, if desired. All sessions are offered outside at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, please dress for the weather! Workshops are $5 per participant, with no charge for chaperoning adults.

Workshops are designed based on Boy Scout requirements but may be suitable also for Girl Scouts. The facilitator for these programs is Brad Parola, a local Assistant Scoutmaster, Eagle Scout, and Wood Badge Course graduate. Brad has been involved in Scouting since childhood and earned a B.S. in Recreation, Parks & Tourism Management from PSU.

To schedule one or more of the Skill Workshops, group leaders are asked to contact Recreation Supervisor Molly Hetrick at Centre Region Parks & Recreation (231-3071).          

A. Light-Weight Backpacking (1.5 hours)
Trekking though the wilderness with everything on your back can be an amazing experience. Learn how to get the most in and out of your backpack so you can make the most of those experiences. We will be exploring equipment options, clothing to pack, trip planning and more.

B. Leave No Trace (1.5 hours)
Learn how to become a steward of our environment with the seven principles of the Leave No Trace outdoor ethics. We will primarily cover hiking and camping, but the program can be adapted to nearly every other activity in the outdoors.

C. Navigation Skills - Map & Compass (1.5 hours)
Orienteering is a valuable and necessary skill for any scout or outdoorsman. We will cover orienting maps, following a compass bearing, pacing, planning and traveling routes, and different techniques used in the field.

Wolf: Your Living World Achievement  (offered only through October)
Come to Millbrook Marsh and explore your living world. Discuss things that impact your world and how you can help! Explore the marsh while cleaning up litter that you find there. By the end of the session, you will have completed all but one of the requirements for the Your Living World elective.

Bear: Sharing your World with Wildlife Achievement  (offered only through October)
Spend some time in Millbrook Marsh and investigate the animals that are all around you. Learn about the many plants and animals that live in the marsh and study one in more detail. Learn about a wildlife conservation officer and about animals in our area that have become endangered or extinct. You will have completed the requirements for this elective by the end of your time at the marsh.

Webelos: Naturalist Activity Badge (offered only through October)
Complete the Naturalist activity badge while spending a fun afternoon at Millbrook Marsh. Explore the marsh and identify some of the plants and animals that you will see. Learn about the ecosystem of this sensitive wetland, about marsh food chains, and how you can help protect the balance of nature. Learn about native and non-native animals, plus how the animals and humans interact together. You will have completed the requirements for this elective by the end of your time at the marsh.

Boy Scouts: Bird Study (offered only through October)
Come to Millbrook Marsh and earn most of the requirements for the Bird Study merit badge. Begin by learning about the parts of birds and then practice using field guides and binoculars so that you are comfortable with them. Spend time in the marsh looking for birds and create and use your own field notebook. Learn to identify birds not only by sight, but also by sound. Enjoy a relaxing time bird watching in the marsh!
