2009 Boy Scout Program Descriptions
Millbrook Marsh Nature Center has group programs designed especially for scout groups
(in addition to our regular group programs!) Participants will complete activities and
explorations that meet all or some of the requirements for a badge or try-it, while exploring Millbrook
Marsh Nature Center with a naturalist. Leaders can schedule a program just for your troop or
gather several troops together. The Program Fee is $6.00 per participant, paid in advance; this fee may be increased depending on the cost of the Scout badges/pins.
WOLF: Your Living World Achievement
Come to Millbrook Marsh and explore “Your Living World”. Scouts will discuss things that impact
our world and how they can help! Explore the marsh and learn about the plants and animals that
live there. Scouts will gather litter from the marsh and talk about how it gets there and the impacts
of “dirty” land, water, and air. Scouts will learn how we protect the marsh and about other
conservation in the area. We will also learn about recycling and saving energy. At the end of the
session, scouts will be challenged to do several activities at home to follow up the lesson and
complete all the requirements for this achievement.
Includes 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e & 7f from Wolf Handbook and suggested follow-up activities to complete
this achievement. Length: approx 2 hours
BEAR: Sharing Your World With Wildlife
Spend some time in Millbrook Marsh and investigate the animals that make the marsh their home.
Scouts will learn about the many animals that live in the marsh and study one in more detail.
Scouts will also learn about wildlife conservation officers in the area and what they do to protect
animals. The naturalist will also guide the scouts to discuss endangered or extinct animals and
encourage them to learn more about groups and regulations that impact these. At the end of the
session, scouts will be challenged to do several activities at home to follow up the lesson and
complete all the requirements for this achievement.
Includes 5a, 5c, 5d and 5e from Bear Handbook and suggested follow up activities to complete this
achievement. Length: approx 2 hours
WEBELOS: Naturalist Activity Badge
Webelos will spend time with a MMNC staff naturalist to complete requirements for this activity
badge. By visiting the center and exploring the marsh, scouts will understand the importance of
aquatic and wetlands ecosystems through explorations, observations, and study. They will observe
animals, insects, and birds in the marsh, while exploring what makes these animals special and why
they chose to live in a marsh. Food chains and human impact on these natural systems will be
discussed, as well as exploring what a Naturalist “does” as their job. At the end of the session,
scouts will be challenged to do several activities at home to follow up the lesson and complete all
the requirements for this achievement.
Includes 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 from Webelos Handbook and suggested follow up activities to complete
this achievement. Length: approx 2 hours
Boy Scout: Bird Study Merit Badge
This program is designed to give Boy Scouts completing the Bird Study Merit Badge a great starting
foundation! Scouts will spend time with a MMNC staff naturalist to learn about bird basics, field
guide and binocular use, and how to observe birds. Exploring Millbrook Marsh, the scouts will
observe and record birds they spot, plus begin to identify the songs and calls of local birds. Scouts
will be encouraged to follow up the program by attending local bird walks or birding events, plus
encouragement on ways to complete the final requirements for this badge. Activities from the Boy
Scout Bird Study manual and the “Flying Wild” curriculum will be used during this program. All
scouts will receive a free copy of the “Susquehanna River Birding and Wildlife Trail Guide” (during
2009, while supplies last.) Program will introduce or cover each of the Badge requirements and
include suggested follow-ups for after the program to complete this Badge. For more details,
please contact us! Length of Program: 3 hours
